The origins of the technique

The technique was developed in the 1890’s by F.M. Alexander.

F.M. Alexander was an Australian actor who developed this method, called today the Alexander method, in the 1890s. In an effort to regain his voice after experiencing vocal trouble, Alexander found several fundamental principles governing human functioning. With this new discovery, Alexander rid himself of his vocal troubles while changing unwanted habits, improving his coordination and breathing and overall well-being.

He went on to develop a method for teaching others, how to stop interfering with their natural poise and return to a balanced, healthy state.
